Most expect that number to continue to climb steadily over the next few years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yes, while many small businesses do fail, the failure rate seems to have been greatly exaggerated. Or, at the very least, heavily scrutinized. The Small Business Administration (SBA) reports that 66 percent of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.successharbor.com\/percentage-businesses-fail-09092015\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">small businesses will survive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> their first two years. You\u2019re doing this for one reason\u2014to ensure that your product or service offering is significantly more valuable than that of your competition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>3) Richard Branson: \u201cIf you praise people, they flourish.\u201d<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although Zappos\u2019 CEO Tony Hsieh, who literally wrote <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B003JTHXN6\/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&amp;btkr=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> book on employee happiness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, might take offense, Branson has learned to harness the power of people (to the tune of a $5 billion <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/profile\/richard-branson\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">net worth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) more than any other successful entrepreneur. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, it was Branson\u2019s people-first philosophy that helped transform Virgin Records into an umbrella of successful business ventures, all of which now bear the Virgin name. Yet, he owns roughly 87% of the company\u2019s shares, which translates to nearly $24 billion. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Like many other tech companies, Bezos used to operate Amazon out of his garage. He has famously said, \u201cOur garage was basically science fair central.\u201d Let\u2019s just say that Amazon quickly outgrew its first \u201coffice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this year, Amazon <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/seattle.curbed.com\/2016\/3\/9\/11189166\/amazon-square-feet-seattle-office-space-urban-union\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">added another 286,000 square feet of Seattle office space<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Stunningly, Amazon now operates 8.3 million total square feet of office space in the Seattle area. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon has grown shockingly fast, morphing into everyone\u2019s favorite e-tailer seemingly overnight. However, when Amazon first launched, it only sold books. That\u2019s it. Just books. And yes, while <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/jeff-bezos-best-advice-to-entrepreneurs-2015-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Amazon did grow rather quickly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the company went public with a $500 million valuation just two years after opening its doors), Bezos has patiently (and rather pragmatically) turned a book e-tailer into what some in the industry are saying could be <\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the largest U.S. company by 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, Bezos knows a thing or two about starting small, staying the course, and thinking long term. His <\/span> advice for aspiring entrepreneurs <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is rather simple: \u201cNever chase the \u2018hot\u2019 thing. That\u2019s like trying to catch the wave, and you\u2019ll never catch it. Determine where you want to go, what you want to accomplish, and ensure that your vision and strategy is designed to achieve your goals. Then, break your roadmap into bite-sized chunks and only focus on one priority at a time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>5) Nick Woodman: \u201cNever let yourself stop being a startup.\u201d<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nick Woodman, GoPro\u2019s surfing CEO, effectively shepherded his first two companies straight into the ground. It was until his third venture, GoPro, that Woodman tasted success. In fact, it was the fear of failure, he says, that enabled him to succeed with GoPro: \u201cI was so scared that I would fail again that I was totally committed to succeed.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, it seems as if Nick has learned a thing or two from his previous failures. Since 2004, GoPro\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/ryanmac\/2013\/03\/04\/the-mad-billionaire-behind-gopro-the-worlds-hottest-camera-company\/#43f46c625a75\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sales have nearly doubled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> each year. Ten years later, in 2014, Woodman become <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2015-04-16\/gopro-s-woodman-seen-trumping-souki-as-highest-paid-ceo-in-2014\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">America\u2019s highest paid CEO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Still, even\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after GoPro\u2019s immense success, Woodman isn\u2019t immune to failure. Last November, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/katevinton\/2016\/11\/03\/gopro-ceo-nick-woodman-is-no-longer-a-billionaire-again-as-gopro-stock-drops-20-after-hours\/#2e29f1f04b23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">GoPro\u2019s stock dropped nearly 20%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, reducing his net worth to $955 million (must be nice) and knocking him\u2014at least momentarily\u2014from the billionaire ranks.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>So, Woodman has learned to follow his gut, embrace failure, and constantly think like a startup. His best advice for entrepreneurs is to trust their instincts: \u201cIn your personal life and in your business, you are your own worst enemy.
