Customers can be demanding. Sometimes the pile of things to do just never seems to stop growing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of all of this \u201cnormal\u201d retail struggle, the fact that the \u201cbuck stops with you\u201d as the owner or manager can get you into a situation that eventually leads to burnout.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strangely, many people seem to think that you can\u2019t be effective in your work life while also being a happy, healthy human being.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We disagree. In fact, we would argue that being happy and healthy is crucial if you want to create a thriving retail store business.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Trouble of Only Focusing On Work<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s be clear: hard work is not a bad thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hard work can lead to some very, very good things in life, like creating a thriving retail store business. However, the buck doesn\u2019t stop at working hard. They\u2019re tuned into radio station \u201cWIIFM:\u201d What\u2019s In It For Me?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No, what your customers care about is getting their wants and needs met. This can happen as a consequence of hard work, but they\u2019re not the same thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So a better definition of your success as a retail store manager is how effective you are. Effectiveness comes from a mixture of:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowing your customers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowing your market<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowing the retail industry\u2019s ins and outs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Innovative thinking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People skills<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And yes, hard work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, in order to be effective, you need to be thinking clearly. It\u2019s really hard to think clearly when you\u2019re not taking care of your body and your mind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this long intro aside, Let\u2019s get into our first fundamental for retail store work-life balance:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>#1: Prioritize Your Own Health Above All Else<\/b><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 14pt;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the international bestseller \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stephencovey.com\/7habits\/7habits.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d author Stephen Covey talks about four categories of work:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work that is urgent and important, as in you need to handle this situation RIGHT now.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work that is urgent and unimportant, like answering time sensitive emails that don&#8217;t lead to big results for your company.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work that is not urgent, but important, like working out and eating healthy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work that is not urgent and not important, like answering non-crucial emails.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Covey argues that you should spend as little time as possible on non-urgent, non-important work, and try to reduce how much time you spend doing urgent, non important work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also stresses that you need to focus on doing non-urgent, but important work, as it&#8217;s easy to put off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since caring for your body leads to your work being more effective, you should view workouts, eating healthy, etc, as a form of work.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"background: #fffb90; border: 1px solid #fffb90; padding: 15px 15px; margin: 0 0 20px 0; font-size: 18px;\"><strong>Feeling burnt out? <\/strong> <a class=\"manual-optin-trigger\" href=\"#\" data-optin-slug=\"rlos3lpzqlra8p4a7hzs\">Click here<\/a> to download our free actionable checklist for maintaining work\/life balance!<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, a workout never feels urgent, \u00a0putting it squarely in Covey\u2019s &#8220;important but not urgent&#8221; category.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is an essential point of the book \u201c<\/span> The Power of Full Engagement <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d by Tony Schwartz, which details how top executives and &#8220;corporate athletes&#8221; hit their highest levels of performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a nutshell, the book explains that quality and quantity of your personal energy determine how much you can get done each day. \u00a0If you continually &#8220;invest&#8221; in the health of your body, you&#8217;ll have higher quality energy, and more of it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, the costs of neglecting your body are quite high. If you are sick, in pain, or chronically tired, it\u2019s going to be real hard to be effective at your job.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re not trying to preach here. You don\u2019t need to be a personal trainer or a fitness nut to take care of your body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some actions you can take that will give you the most benefit for the least amount of effort:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Get at least 7.5 hours of sleep a night. Lack of sleep impairs mental performance.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do 15 minutes of movement a day. This could be as simple as walking at a comfortable pace on a treadmill. Obviously, more is better (up to a point).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eat fresh fruits and vegetables during at least one meal a day.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">See close friends or family members whom you enjoy spending time with at least once a week for 2-3 hours of \u201cpresent moment time.\u201d Humans are social animals and loneliness has been shown to be as dangerous as smoking a pack of cigarettes a day.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you want to upgrade to \u201clevel 2,\u201d consider these actions:<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go to the gym or an exercise class 2-3 times a week.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do 30-40 minutes of easy movement a day (long walks are perfect).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schedule in 5-15 minutes of journaling time daily where you write down things that you\u2019re thankful for in your life.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read books that inspire you on a daily basis for 10-30 minutes.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enough with the preachy health stuff, though. Just know that this is by far your biggest fundamental.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>#2: You Have Limited Time, Prioritize Accordingly<\/b><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 14pt;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often, we fall into the trap of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201chow can I get more done today?\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The issue is that we only have so much time.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re reading this, it\u2019s unlikely that you\u2019re a lazy person who simply needs to do more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, a better question to ask is, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhat should I focus on today that will create the biggest impact for my business?\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As an owner\/manager, you need to be strategic. You have to go into the trenches as well, depending on how big your business is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, never forget that you have to prioritize things.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An easy way to do this is to use the \u201c3 Most Important Tasks\u201d mindset.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It works like this: at the end of each work day, write down the 3 things that you want to get done the next day that will make the biggest impact in your business.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Either send these to yourself as an email (subject line: \u201c3 for Thursday\u201d) or write them in a journal where you will review them the next day.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following day, make it your sole mission to accomplish these tasks BEFORE doing anything else.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We know this may not be possible at all times but do your best.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This process will help you to constantly refocus on what\u2019s truly important, rather than just trying to get more stuff done.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>#3: Understand the Power of Focus<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In modern times, we\u2019re being distracted to death.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smartphones, email, social media, and the like are all our constantly pinging us for our attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a retail store, you may have employees or customers to deal with as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problem with this is that it prevents you from doing what author Cal Newport refers to as \u201cdeep work,\u201d that is, important work that demands your full attention.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, maybe you\u2019re coming up with<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.agiliron.com\/blog\/5-tips-to-help-your-retail-team-sell-more-without-being-salesy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a training program that will help your team sell more<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> without turning customers away.<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"background: #fffb90; border: 1px solid #fffb90; padding: 15px 15px; margin: 0 0 20px 0; font-size: 18px;\"><strong>Feeling burnt out? <\/strong> <a class=\"manual-optin-trigger\" href=\"#\" data-optin-slug=\"rlos3lpzqlra8p4a7hzs\">Click here<\/a> to download our free actionable checklist for maintaining work\/life balance!<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the book<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.co.th\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;cad=rja&amp;uact=8&amp;ved=0ahUKEwj20rjx8PbUAhULpY8KHdslDK8QFggmMAA&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FDeep-Work-Focused-Success-Distracted%2Fdp%2F1455586692&amp;usg=AFQjCNFLFQmEj7yIdTQl3W_1ZdjuSy6Iag\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDeep Work,\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Newport outlines several tips for doing your best work, including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t look at email, social media, etc, until you\u2019ve done your most important tasks. If you can\u2019t avoid at least checking email, make it a point to only answer truly important ones until a later point in the day. An easy way to help with this is to disable notifications on your phone.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Schedule some \u201coffice time\u201d where employees know that they shouldn\u2019t bother you. If this isn\u2019t an option, schedule this time before or after you head into work (preferably before).<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Train your staff to be more self-sufficient and give them more power to make independent decisions so that they only bother you for things that absolutely require your attention.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>#4: Schedule Time Off<\/b><\/h2>\n<p dir=\"ltr\" style=\"margin-top: 0pt; margin-bottom: 14pt;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are running the show, it can seem challenging to schedule time off.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You might fear that your employees will think you\u2019re lazy, or maybe you\u2019ll think that you\u2019re lazy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The truth is, if you burn out, you won\u2019t be serving anyone\u2014especially yourself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why it\u2019s a good idea to take one full day off from work each week, at a minimum. Spend this day at a slower pace, and make sure to focus on rest and recovery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trust us; you\u2019ll find that even taking one full day off a week will make the other six days much more productive.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>#5: Realize Things Will Never Be Perfect<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work life balance isn\u2019t something you can \u201cachieve.\u201d It\u2019s not a milestone or a destination.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, it\u2019s a philosophy. It\u2019s an idea that says, \u201cHey, work is really important but other things are important too.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this blog post, we may have made things seem simple and on paper, many things seem that way. But in the real world, things get messy. You might have a family emergency, or have a work emergency, or have a health scare.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, you can\u2019t control everything in life. All you can do is your best.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why it\u2019s important to cut yourself a little slack and realize that nothing human will ever be perfect. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perfection is a myth.
